The Shropshire village of Aston Botterell lies just 8 miles south west of the large market town of Bridgnorth and barely 10 miles north east of Ludlow. Eddowes’s Journals provided an account of the races which took place in fields on the edge of the village on Tuesday 17th October 1848. The card consisted of 3 races, starting with the Ladies Purse which saw Mr Jackson’s Mountain Maid beat Brown Bess and Catherine. The Burwarton Hurdle followed and was won by Mr Garbett’s Netchwood Lass, while the feature Aston Botterell Handicap was a keenly fought affair resulting in victory for Rebecca. There are no further reports of racing in the village. |
